Default folder
I am not clear about “folder to import” and which the default folder is or will be after importing.
I could not select “Daily” in the menu… Had to erase /Smolpad in /Documents and start anew with /Smolpad in /Containers for Smolpad to behave correctly!

Thank you for writing in, and sorry for the confusion.
Two things first, so I can be exact: what version of Smolpad are you on (Settings › About), and what does Settings › Storage say about where the Smolpad notepad is stored: on this Mac, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, pCloud or Google Drive?
Choose folder to import, in Settings › Storage, copies the Markdown and text files at the top level of a folder you pick into the notepad you are in, once. The folder you pick is only read, and the originals stay where they are.
The notepad menu, behind the pill between the gear and the search, lists your recent notepads, and Notepads… in it shows them all. Settings › Storage lists them too. Smolpad is the default notepad, and its folder is your library: every other notepad's copy lives inside it, so it cannot be renamed or removed. Show in Finder on its card opens that folder. With iCloud Drive off it is inside Smolpad's own container on this Mac, which is the Containers path you found, not the Documents folder in your home.
If you want a folder of your own to be the one Smolpad shows, Add New › Choose Folder… makes it a notepad, and Make Active on its card makes it the one shown. Smolpad edits the files where they are. With Sync notes on, it also keeps a copy of them in a Smolpad Sync folder, so your other devices, an iPhone say, can reach those notes too, and the copy stays in sync with the original folder.
Daily is the folder today's note goes into. Smolpad creates it the first time you open today's note, in the notepad you are in, and Settings › General › Daily Note › Daily notes folder picks a different folder. Nothing I know of keeps Daily from being picked, so one more question: in which menu could you not select it, Settings › General or Move to Folder? A screenshot of that menu would help.
Two things I am thinking about from your note: a setting that fixes which notepad keeps your daily notes (today it is whichever notepad is showing), and a setting for the notepad Smolpad opens with (today it opens with the one you used last, on every device).

Perhaps better to be able to select a folder for default and add any imports.
